All our programming includes music, dance (movement) and costumes (crafts).
Though hands-on crafts are only suggested for reoccurring workshops where enough time is allotted to achieve interesting results, we always include the visual part of carnival in workshops and performances so a full picture of the tradition is understood.
Music: Based mainly on Brazilian drumming, participants learn traditional rhythms and songs. With the aid of several authentic percussion instruments participants will get a glimpse of the euphoric carnival music that uplifts the streets of Brazil.
Movement: Rooted in Brazilian dance and “Capoeira” (Afro-Brazilian Martial Art), both intense physical exercise forms. Participants will learn rhythm as a whole body experience, gaining body awareness and learning some tricks that are even used by the famous Brazilian soccer players.
Crafts: In our workshops we discuss construction of the instruments and costumes used in carnival, some samples are shown and in lengthy programs where enough time is allocated to the crafting of props, participants will get to create a take-home costume piece or instrument with simple, readily available materials and recyclables.
